Monash University FODMAP diet App Reviews

Report...

This is a great concept and it actually helped me feel better quickly. The bad news is that I cant get copy of what I ate the first week to know what worked after all my careful journaling. When I ask for a report the Ap just shuts down. Please fix it!

Not all that useful

Some issues I have with this App: (1) It requires a network connection (either WiFI or cellular) to function. (2) There are many head-scratcher, apparent inconsistencies. Example: Why is "Oatmeal, fine, organic" high in oligos, but "Oatmeal, coarse, organic" not?? Why are "Flakes of corn (USA)" high in oligos, but "Flakes of corn" not?? It seems like, unless the specific brand/source is cited, the user is going to have no clue as to whether a particular brand or source is or is not low-FODMAP. This is especially true of processed foods and breads.

The best FODMAP diet guide yet!

It could use a larger database. Hopefully the app will fund that research to build the database. Keep up the good work!

Useful!

I like the app, especially now that they have tested more foods. I appreciate direct accurate data, verses trying to find reliable info on the internet. Looking forward to more foods being tested and posted!

Good for what it is

This app is good for what it is, which is an Australian low FODMAP food guide. It does not always have equivalent or matching American products and is by no means comprehensive. However for whats in there I find it to be a very helpful guide. It utilizes an easy to follow traffic light system (red for high FODMAP content, yellow for intermediate and green for low). I especially appreciate that they rate different portion sizes. Its updated sometimes when new foods are tested. My complaint is that its not entirely user friendly or intuitive, and its so expensive. However, that said, I think its the best and most accurate FODMAP app available.

Erased stuff!

Did anyone else experience their stuff in the dairy being erased!?? I had to delete and reinstall the app and all of my dairy stuff was gone!!!

Great idea

I am thrilled to find an app that addresses this issue, however it wont save or rate my recipes for my daily journal so I know how well I did with the meal.

Confusing and inconsistent

I already have a good grasp on the FODMAPS diet and was hoping this would be the definitive resource for reliable info. Instead, I have found this app so frustrating! I appreciate that Monash U has tried to create an app to help us, but I find it more confusing than helpful. How can saltine crackers, made with wheat flour, be on the "ok" list? How about "oatmeal, gluten free, coarse" = green light, but "oatmeal, gluten free, fine" = yellow (both are from the same country, so presumably the same brand). How could the cut of the oatmeal make a difference? The carbohydrate content is the same, no matter the shape. It makes absolutely no sense. There are SO many conflicting ratings like this. Brand names of products are listed only for certain countries (Australian ones) but not for products in other countries. Bread was one very clear example - they are testing specific brands, why not list them so we can know what to buy and what to avoid? I prefer the smaller but more consistent info from the ODMP app (and its much less expensive). I thought the Monash app would provide more detailed and accurate info considering it comes from the testing source, but Im disappointed.

To regimented to be helpful- cant recommend

I wanted to track my symptoms using the food diary. You can only choose from their selections or recipes. I wanted to put in gluten free oatmeal... Not available. I am already familiar with fodmap and following it. I wanted to add stuff back and track symptoms, but it seems useless since I already have things I know I can have. I dont find it useful, then to be limited to their choices. I cant recommend this app. I do find helpful that it breaks the triggers up specifically bc I seem to have problems with the oligos mostly, and I can avoid them more readily knowing which trigger is in each food.

Unable to sort or export shopping list

I have tried every way I could think of to sort the completed shopping list my department or to export it so that I could sort it myself to make the shopping quicker. Neither available. Also editing shopping list cumbersome. I had to start over several times it wouldnt allow a "recipe delete" or multiple delete of individual items.

Very helpful

I dont use the shopping list or journal so Im not going to review that. I do use the green light system to look up foods several times a day. Its so helpful to know that an item is safe at a certain portion. I would be lost with out it!

Filters do not work

I would like any easy way to see which foods in the list have the high FODMAP that doesnt work for me. There is a filter that should grey out the food with those high levels but it doesnt actually work. Frustrating and I cant find a way to contact the app developer.

My most trusted FODMAP Guide

....From the experts. I do wish it would open from the lookup database though.

Save your money!

I have mixed feelings about this app. I like that safe/unsafe amounts of certain foods are clearly defined but that they are given a green light (rather than a yellow bc there actually are unsafe amounts) makes no sense. One must open every green light file to check. also some foods just make no sense. For example, strong black tea made with water is considered moderate fodmap, but strong black tea with cows milk is low fodmap (cow milk is high fodmap)-makes no sense! There are other examples of such inconsistencies. Some foods such as soy milk have multiple entries to account for the different sources but other nondairy milks such as coconut have only one or two even though there are several types. Further coconut milk is listed twice-one is high and one is low but no difference in the source is explained (one is canned and one is long life uht). I expected more from the fodmap experts. Save your money. A quick Google search is more informative and actually faster. Bummer-I was really hoping for an easy access definitive guide. Im really upset I paid for this.

Mixed feelings

I like the food guide on this app but the diary section doesnt work well at all. It continues to send me alerts saying I havent filled in yesterdays diary (no matter what day it is, yesterdays always seems to have been a problem!). I expected more technical fluency from Monash to be honest

5 Stars for info, 4 Stars for app issues

The info in the app is great, I appreciate that they are constantly testing new foods to add to the list. The diet is extremely confusing at first and the app can be confusing because of that. But once you get the hang of it, its so helpful. My complaints have to do with some bugs in the food diary section. (iPad) It would never register my end of day journal entry for the first day only. And entering in my own food/recipe was also confusing. There isnt much explanation as to how that works (is it a communal database?), many repeated items, unclear. Originally, I didnt want to pay that much for this app, but finally did when I realized Monash is where the FODMAP stuff originated and most importantly where they TEST food (not just make assumptions based on observations).

Good info but app needs work

While this is probably one of the few FODMAP apps that has good information, there are serious issues with the functionality of the app. The search field and results are not functional. If you search blue, you get no results. If you search blueberry, you get blueberry. In my mind that is not a functional search system (when you cannot place part of a name and receive a result). The other thing that is a little off is that the app is not written for HiDpi screens. So on an iPhone 5 or 6 it is not native and is rendered at low resolution. I recommend this app for the information but it is possible that you may get frustrated with it.
